Dr. Kei Otsuki, Dr. Ari Susanti, and Dr. Rijanta on Urbanization Challenges at WINNER

During the Week of Indonesia-Netherlands Education and Research (WINNER), Dr. Kei Otsuki, Dr. Ari Susanti, and Dr. Rijanta participated in an insightful session addressing Indonesia’s ongoing urban transformation and the pressing need for inclusive development. Hosted by WINNER, an initiative involving institutions like BRIN, ALMI, KNAW, Nuffic Southeast Asia, and government bodies from both nations, the event brought together experts and students from Indonesia and the Netherlands to discuss the future of urbanization.

As Indonesia’s urban population swells—projected to reach 67% by 2035—Indonesian cities are evolving rapidly, not only in megacities but also in smaller urban areas. This urban shift, alongside the country’s policy of decentralization, has empowered local actors to shape their cities’ futures, creating opportunities to make urban spaces more attractive, sustainable, and inclusive. The session underscored the impact of Indonesia’s new capital, Nusantara, and the challenges it presents for neighboring areas, where the focus on a “smart and green” city must consider the needs and opportunities for all social groups.

By fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing, the WINNER session provided a critical platform for Indonesian and Dutch researchers to explore strategies for managing growth, social inclusion, and sustainable urban development in Indonesia’s rapidly changing landscape.
